Tough Steps in Getting Key Senators to Extend Patriot Act
The White House has taken tougher measures to force-feed recalcitrant Senate Republicans the broad antiterrorism law known as the USA Patriot Act, after concluding that some were determined to commit congressional suicide to protest the country’s indefinite confinement to these measures.
In recent weeks, two leading Democrats were also strapped into the “patriot chairs,” sometimes for hours a day, to feed them bottled up information and prevent them from vomiting afterward. Senator John E. Sununu of New Hampshire, who joined with Democrats last year in a filibuster that blocked the bill, had been placed in isolation for extended periods in what the officials said was an effort to keep them from being encouraged by others.
