A Live One: Code-Name “Vegas” February 16, 2006

According to microsoftwatch.com:

Microsoft continues to crank out more Windows Live services. The latest, for which selected testers just received invites, is a “Family Safety Settings” service, code-named “Vegas.”

Now, admittedly, I took my family on vacation a few years ago to Las Vegas, and was pleasantly surprised at how “family friendly it was.” Regardless, the current ad campaign for Las Vegas makes me wonder if the new security model of Windows Vista will be, “If you get your computer infected, that your business, and we’re not going to stop you from doing so. However, we will make sure that you don’t go infecting anyone else.” I’m seeing this as good news for your network, even if it’s not an improvement for your computer.

In other words, “What happens in Windows Vista, stays in Windows Vista.”

Ladies First, or First Ladies? February 15, 2006

I’m not sure what’s more ironic: Laura Bush suggesting that Hillary Clinton should show some empathy for the White House occupants (where was the current First Lady when President Clinton got caught with his pants down?), or Hillary suggesting that she’s not angry (Saddam has been doing a better job of controlling his temper lately than Senator Clinton).

Didn’t they get the “love message” sent by Bush Sr. and Clinton while they were (insert exclamation of mock shock and horror here) more focused on accomplishing a task than partisan politics?

According to SFGATE.com, a Bay Area group is going “cold turkey” on traditional capitalism and refusing to “buy new.” (They make exceptions for food, health & safety items, and underwear.) According to the article:

About 50 teachers, engineers, executives and other professionals in the Bay Area have made a vow to not buy anything new in 2006…

“We’re people for whom recycling is no longer enough,” said one of the members of the fledgling movement, John Perry, who works in marketing at a high-tech company. “We’re trying to get off the first-market consumerism grid, because consumer culture is destroying the world.”

This begs the question: What’s their stance on virginity?

Hunting for a Vice-President? February 14, 2006

Some random thoughts about VP Cheney’s hunting accident:

Guns don’t kill people. Lawyers who dress up in orange and step in front of someone with a loaded gun kill people.

From Boing Boing:

President Bush reportedly told the Houston Chronicle, that Cheney was “somebody who is going to shoot straight with the American people.”

We didn’t realize he was going to shoot AT the American people.

Several years ago, a Bush went hunting for Quayle for VP, who we later learned had been reluctant to shoot a gun.

Funny how times have changed
