Drive Time 1 September 9, 2007

I know… I need to video these earlier in the day instead of in twilight. There’s some color funkiness that comes in when things got really dark, but such is life.

I’m debating trying this instead of writing everything. Please let me know what you think.

I like the video. It’s interesting to have the tone and inflections of your voice to go with the words. However, video makes it more difficult to go back and find something that I want to rehear; it’s easier to scan back over something in writing.

I also worry that you’ll have a wreck while concentrating on what you’re saying instead of driving! 😀

Thanks. I’ve wondered the same thing about the ability to re-read something. At home, I’ve grown so accustomed to the ability to scan back with the DVR, that I really notice this when I’m listening to radio, and can’t go back to catch up on something I just missed.

As for concentrating on the road, I had pre-written most of what I wanted to say, at least in the basic structural form, so it wasn’t much different from having a one-sided conversation with a passenger. Granted, the people in the parking lot thought I was kind of strange, because they could look in the car and see the video camera, but I’ve never been that concerned about looking strange. 😉 – Tim

I like it! I have to agree with Tiffany…I worry you’ll get in an accident. But, the plus side of the video is, I try and guess…”Where in the world is Tim?” 🙂

I like the video, including because I appreciate the opportunity to hear your inflection. However, it does make it harder to skip back. Just an hour ago I almost reached for a remote to skip back and catch something I missed on satellite radio.

I always appreciate hearing my brother’s voice. And hearing the echo of my father’s voice that resonates in Tim’s

I enjoyed the message…..and am glad I stumbled upon your blog.
Also, the video was cool……I want to copy this technique …..I just have to find someone with a convertible!

Rose & Bonnie,

First, I apologize for the delayed response! As far as the accident potential, it wasn’t really different (for me) from talking with another passenger in the car. I’ve noticed the same thing about the linear nature of video and audio compared with text, and that’s one thing that has caused me some angst over doing this more. The other is that it’s time consuming.

Melissa,

Thanks for stopping by. The other issue that I’m faced with (living in KY) is that you can’t go around with the top down all year long. I might experiment with the top up, but it seems so claustrophobic when I’m driving, I’m afraid it would be even more so to the video passenger. Who knows until I try? – Tim
