Out of Africa March 20, 2007

I’m back from the trip, and am almost coherent again. I spent about 8 days in Djibouti, and the rest of my time in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. All in all, it was a wonderfully productive trip. I enjoyed lots of time elbow-to-elbow with my childhood best friend, and he and I accomplished a lot while we were there.
I took lots of pictures, but for now, here are a couple that I snagged with my camera phone:
(OK, that wasn’t taken in Africa. That’s the business end of a Ford GT sitting in the Dubai airport.)
That’s a panorama of three images I took of the Ghourbet, which is part of the Gulf of Arden. To see exactly where I was when I took that pic, the Google Map location is here.
The last picture is of the small island that you can see in the Google map. I took this pic, standing in a few inches of water, roughly at the center of the map, looking East.
Review: 2006 Hyundai Azera September 20, 2006

By a pleasant twist of fate, I recently was upgraded from a Hyundai Accent to a Hundai Azera. Not having any clue about the Hyundai line, I didn’t know if I was being put into an SUV, a mid-size, or an uncomfortable econobox. Fortunately for me, the Azera is none of these.
Small Caliber Big Shot? September 12, 2006

There aren’t many times that I get to feel like a big shot, but the current trip I’m on (to New Hampshire… again) turned out that way.
It started out innocently enough. While pre-printing my boarding passes for the Northwest flight to Detroit, and then to Manchester, I noticed the option for “a free upgrade to First Class if available.” (I was offered this because my trips to Dubai last year seem to have permanently ensconced me in the “Plutonium Elite” class.) Without thinking much about it, I selected that option, and did the same for the Detroit-Manchester leg of the trip. (more…)

There are things that, even when you see them with your own eyes, you can’t believe. On Wednesday, I was driving down Main Street in Concord, NH.
Out of the corner of my eye, I had seen this… large brown thing on top of a PT Cruiser. (more…)
See God… Then Brake August 15, 2006

Sunday, my best friend (since childhood) went with me to watch the Meijer Indy 300 at the Kentucky Speedway (located in beautiful Sparta, KY). Prior to the race, he and I went souvenir shopping, and I found a t-shirt that many would say expresses my philosophy behind the wheel.
The races were exciting, the weather was hot (but beautiful), and I got to spend several hours talking with someone that I can reconnect with in five minutes, as if we’ve never been apart. Even better, our conversations allowed us to dive into some weighty issues, and I got to “see God” (in the mind and heart of my buddy) without having to tap the brake.
