Shoes Too Big To Fill
A little boy, the dreams of youth
Dreaming he’ll become a man
To walk and talk just like his dad
Go places only daddy can
He tries on clothes from days gone by
And with a twinkle in his eye
Begins to form a little plan
For office wear, he needs a hat
And then he needs a shirt and tie
A Sunday coat and handkerchief
And pants pulled up a bit too high
Then lastly he puts on some shoes
Then rushes in to share the news
But stumbles, trips, and starts to cry
Daddy’s shoes, too big to fill
But surely I can find a way
To be like him, I know I will
But that will be another day
The father watches the rising son
He’s just a teen, he grew so fast
He’s more a man with each new day
And daddy’s height is soon surpassed
Look, even now eyes almost meet
And looking at the growing feet
Father knows his reign won’t last
Not one to let his chances fade
Dad walks and talks and teaches too
The food that grows a bigger man
He knows is not just what we chew
It’s sometimes things you don’t partake
It’s also knowing what’s at stake
In things that we choose not to do
Daddy’s shoes, too big to fill
But surely I can find a way
To be like him, I know I will
But that will be another day
Daddy’s shoes, too big to fill
How can I ever find a way
To equal him, I never will
For all I have are feet of clay
